According to a study commissioned by the WHO, approximately 150 Million people worldwide are in need of a pair of glasses, but cannot afford one. The organization EinDollarBrille e. V. has the solution: The OneDollarGlasses consist of a lightweight and flexible spring-steel wire and pre-cut lenses. They are manufactured on a simple bending machine by specially trained local staff. The material cost of a pair of glasses is about 1 US$, the selling price around 2-3 times of typical local daily wages. Local salaries and material are financed from the difference between material cost and selling price.Apart from that, the organization has developed its own 1-year training concept in Best-Spherical-Correction (BSC), which enables trained staff to find the best possible spherical lense during the eyesight test and to adapt the glasses in a professional way. The goal of OneDollarGlasses is a continuous and financially independent basic eye care for people in developing countries.
